"Sure," Tara said slowly. "But who doesn't? What's special about that." Amelia, Alistair and Cricket stared at her and she suddenly remembered something Cricket had said to her before. "You think I'm an empath? That's crazy! What even is an empath?"

The twins turned their heads to look at Cricket.
"What you want...but you suggested...ok fine" Cricket pulled Tara down beside her on the couch.
"Kay, now...please try to keep an open mind when I tell you this." Cricket started. Receiving a nod she continued, "An empath is someone who picks up on other people's emotions, they can tell how someone else is feeling and sometimes experience those feelings for themselves. Occasionally you can get people that have the power to feel the emotions of animals, plants, planetary systems, even inanimate objects. The latter is usually caused by the owner of said possession, who may have been experiencing emotional turmoil at the time. "For example, say I was drowning and all the emotions I was experiencing at the moments were heightened by my fear of death. Then I touched the locket I was wearing around my neck. Moments, days, months, years, later and empath could tell or experience exactly what I was feeling during my death. It's a very powerful gift, Amelia has it. And frankly, if she says you have it... I think you have it. Of course there's always room for mistakes so you might not."

"Ok," said Tara. "So I can telll other people's emotions. What does this mean? How do I know if I have it?"

Twins continue to look at Cricket.
"Don't look at me!! I don't have it!" Cricket yelled.
Raised eyebrows and pointed stares meet the outburst.
"Hey, just because I dabble in the occult does not mean that I know how to test people for their issues!"
Glare.
"Okay okay, gifts. But I'm sorry I really can't help-HEY! I can help you! Lets head over to Columbia. They have a metaphysics faculty!"

"But don't we need to help Bethen and Ash?" Tara asked. "Don't worry," said Kiki, who'd been watching the whole exchange. "You guys run down there. We'll stay here and keep an eye on them."

"We don't have to go" The twins said in unison.
"Oh no you don't! You brought it up, you're coming with-" Cricekt started.
"Cricket" Kiki interrupted, "Would they really help you? I know they actually have this thing but you're the one who knows where your going and who to ask. They can stay here and help us with Ash and Bethan. Take Anaka with you"
"Take Anaka with you" Anaka mimmicked, "Wait what?"
"Come on..." Cricekt sighed. Tara and Anaka followed her out.

"Feel loved," Tara said to Ananka with a smile. "You are ever so lightly used!" They followed Cricket to the university. She went to the metaphysics facility and Cricket led them to the office of one Dr R Swoon, expert in the paranormal. He was a tall, skinny man with large round glasses long hair and a long scraggly beard.

"I don't need keeping an eye on" protested Ash, "and I can look after Bethan just fine" "I don't need looking after" "yes you do" "No I don't!" "do too" "do not" "do too" "okay, shut up" Kiki interrupted Bethan stuck out her tongue at Ash "it was directed at the both of you" clarified Kiki Bethan suddenly lost interest in the argument and turned to the leader of the irregulars "where did they all go"

Anaka and Tara stared at the guy in amazement. His glasses were so thick he probably couldn't see an inch in front of himself without them. His long hair was shorter on one side and stuck out at odd angles. Pieces of paper stuck out from the depths of his long beard and from all appearances he hadn't slept in days.
"How's it going doc?" Cricket said taking no notice of his rather unorthodox appearance.
"We've just had a major breakthrough in the world of metaphysical science! Our research indicates that all powers within the Mental Sphere could be genetically transferred, meaning they are the results of a specific genetic makeup of the human genome!" Swoon...swooned.
"That's great!" Cricket said looking as if she was about to start rambling.
"But that's not what you came here for. Is your sister having trouble still?"
"She's getting better. I modified those exercises your staff formulated and she's developed stronger mental shields. But um...actually I'm not here about that, I'm here about my friend Tara. Amelia seems to think she's developing an empathetic power and we were wondering if there were tests to confirm that theory"
"Well...yes...yes there are. It would be this young lady then right?" Dr. Swoon pointed at Tara.
"Yes! How'd you know!"
"Well, the other young lady is Anaka Fishbien. She's in my associates history class." Swoon said to Tara, "Let's get to work shall we?" __________________________________________________ Amelia and Alistair both sat still staring at the group.
"We need to be filled in on the events that lead up to now" They said to Kiki.

Tara followed Swoon with Ananka behind her. She walked up to Cricket. "This guy is something else," she whispered. They walked to a room that had a metal, chair, one of those red therapist couches, and an array of paranormal objects.

"heh heh...whats the metal chair for doc?" Cricket said uncertainly.
"To test lightnings attraction to humans." Dr. Swoon said.
"What!" All three girls yelled.
"Don't be stupid, it's the chair my patients sit in"
"Isn't the couch for your patients?" Anaka asked skeptically.
"What, and give a more comfortable chair to someone who doesn't spend all their time here? I don't think so!"

Tara raised an eyebrow at this, but couldn't help stiffling a smile. The doctor was so eccentic it was funny. "Ok," she said, sitting in the chair, "So what do we do now?" "Well, first i pick apart your brain." He took in Tara's suprised ook with a chuckle. "Kidding, my dear. actually, first i just have some questions to ask." "Ok," Tara said uncertainatly. "Shoot."

Dr. Swoon grabbed a clip board and a pen and proceeded to seat himself on his couch. He gestured to the desk covered in papers and told Cricket and Anaka to make themselves comfortable.
Once everyone was settled Swoon continued to ask a series of general questions: Did she pick up on more emotions in crowds, small groups, or when she was on her own. Did she feel emotions around objects, plants, animals, people. Did she just feel them or did she experience and display them. Who's emotions can she sense the best when at home or with close friends. Has she felt suffocated lately, if so has she considered isolating herself from the places where she experiences the most strain.
"Alright, pretty good data so far" Swoon said, "I just have one more question and then we'll move onto object testing"
Tara nodded.
Swoon glanced at his clipboard, then pen at the ready he asked, "Do you have any reoccurring dreams?"

Tara looked about nervously. She wrung her hands. After several seconds of internal debate, she nodded. "At first, I thought I was going crazy. But it kept coming, over and over, the same dream. There's this girl. She's got black hair and brown eyes. But her eyes, they're mean, and scary, and maybe just a bit hurt. I can tell this girl isn't to be trifled with. And, even though she doesn't say it, I know she's after something. And then Cricket's sister, Amelia, shows up. She's kind and smart. I know that she's supposed to be my guide. And then it all goes dark as a thick black cloud comes in and all i can feel is fear, fear so thick I'm drowning in it. And then I wake up." She was shaking by the time she was done talking, as if reliving the memory.

Cricket's eyes widened just a trifle. If Amelia knew this then Tara would definitly be joining them in their little lessons. Not that that was a bad thing. Knowing Amelia, the secret was out. Of course Amelia and Alistair wouldn't say anything until Tara was ready for their help.
"Well..." Dr. Swoon said, "That certainly indicates something. We here in the Metaphysics Department take reocurring dreams very seriously. I'd say we should just stop but I'd really like to test you on OER, Object Emotional Recall"
Swoon placed an old pocket watch, a blue piece of china, and a mangled slightly singed teddy bear.
"Touch each one in turn and tell me what you feel. Don't worry none of the objects will hold painful memories"
